For his new film master director Patricio Guzman, famed for his political documentaries ("The Battle of Chile," "The Pinochet Case"), travels 10,000 feet above sea level to the driest place on earth, the Atacama Desert, where atop the mountains astronomers from all over the world gather to observe the stars. The sky is so translucent that it allows them to see right to the boundaries of the universe.

The Atacama is also a place where the harsh heat of the sun keeps human remains intact: those of Pre-Columbian mummies; 19th century explorers and miners; and the remains of political prisoners, "disappeared" by the Chilean army after the military coup of September, 1973. So while astronomers examine the most distant and oldest galaxies, at the foot of the mountains, women, surviving relatives of the disappeared whose bodies were dumped here, search, even after twenty-five years, for the remains of their loved ones, to reclaim their families' histories.

Filmed over nearly three years, "Waste Land" follows Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to Rio de Janeiro's Jardim Gramacho, the world's largest garbage dump. There he photographs an eclectic band of "catadores" — self-designated pickers of recyclable materials.

Famed for his use of unconventional materials, Muniz's initial objective was to "paint" the catadores with garbage. However, the project evolves into something more interesting, with Muniz hiring the catadores to recreate their images on a huge scale from recycled materials and then photographing them from above.

His collaboration with these inspiring men and women as they recreate their portraits out of trash reveals both their dignity and despair as they begin to re-imagine their lives. Director Lucy Walker has great access to the entire process and, in the end, offers stirring evidence of the transformative power of art and the alchemy of the human spirit.

Take a road trip into the heart of the Emerald Triangle, a geographical region where marijuana is grown in lush and pungent abundance, where it is the number-one cash crop, and where (in some places) it is the mainstay of the local rural economy. In what savage region can you find this wicked lawless place – California.

The Emerald Triangle begins more or less in Sonoma County and goes up (so to speak) from there. In some of these regions you can hear people say, "If it weren't for medical marijuana, people wouldn't be able to live here. There would be no local economy otherwise." And you hear this: "The lumber industry is shutting down. The real economy now is marijuana." These are some of the people you meet in "Cash Crop."

The film actually makes a good visitors-bureau-style travelogue of the Golden State—especially for people who enjoy looking at voluptuous stems full of resinous bud. Along the way we meet a lot of nice people "living life the way they think it should be lived" and wanting to keep the mom-and-pop spirit of their farming operations. We meet a Mendocino County sheriff who is just tired of spending 30 percent of his time enforcing marijuana laws. "Let's move on," he says. "The fact of the matter is, Americans like their marijuana."
